Style sheet

Settle tense, forms of address and dialogue typography once for the whole book.

Steps

  1. Open the “Style sheet” card in the book’s Settings tab, or in the series’ Defaults tab for every volume.
  2. Set the “Narrative tense” (simple past, compound past or present), “Forms of address” (informal or formal), “Honorifics” (keep, translate or drop), “Dialogue (typography)” (French quotation marks, em dashes or English quotation marks), “Register” (elevated, plain or colloquial) and “Profanity” (faithful or softened).
  3. Under “Who says tu, who says vous”, add each pair of characters whose form of address differs from the general rule with “Add the couple”.
  4. Save. In a volume, a field shows “Inherited from the series: …” until you set it for that volume.

What to know

A field left on “Left to the model” lets the model decide, as it did before style sheets existed. The sheet becomes rules in the translation prompt, and the dialogue typography is also checked in the translated text. It applies to the translations that follow: changing it does not retranslate anything by itself. Anything the sheet does not cover goes into the global instructions.

Fictional example

For a fictional novel, choose em dashes for dialogue, keep the honorifics, and make Mara and the harbour master say vous to each other while the rest of the cast says tu.
