Translation mannerisms
Spot the turns of phrase a model keeps reaching for, and a vocabulary that narrows.
Steps
- In the book’s Quality tab, find the “Translation mannerisms” card and click “Analyse this volume”, or “Analyse the whole series” for a volume that belongs to one.
- Read “Repetitions to inspect”: phrases of three to five words that translate many different source passages. Compare the examples in context before deciding.
- Read “Frequent turns of phrase”: phrases that recur while the source repeats too. Whether it is a refrain or a crutch is for you to decide.
- Under “Vocabulary richness”, look at the chapters furthest below the book’s own average, poorest first, and reread them.
What to know
The report reads the translations already stored and calls no model, so it costs nothing and can be run as often as you like. A phrase is reported once it appears at least 8 times. Different source passages can rightly share one translation, so every finding is a lead for proofreading, not an established error.
Fictional example
Check whether a recurring “un sourire discret” renders one expression the author repeats on purpose, or flattens several different descriptions of a fictional character.
