Special volumes and free labels

Keep DX, EX, side books and in-between volumes in their real reading order.

Steps

  1. In the import assistant or in the volume’s settings, fill in “Volume number or label”: a whole number from 1 to 10,000 makes an ordinary volume, any other text of up to 60 characters makes a free label, such as DX1, EX or LN 14+.
  2. Check the order. A label that starts with a number, possibly after LN, Vol. or Tome, comes right after the volume with that number; LN 14+ is read between volumes 14 and 15. Other labels come at the end of the series, after every numbered volume.
  3. Leave the field empty only for a volume that truly has no place in the reading order. The import assistant asks you to confirm that choice with “Confirm: no number”.
  4. After an export or a publication, check the series metadata: a label anchored to a number gets the position halfway to the next volume, such as 14.5, while an end-of-series label gets no position at all.

What to know

A volume has either a number or a label, never both, and Libris Translate never invents a number for a label. The same number or label cannot be used twice in a series, whatever the case and spacing. The reading order decides what a volume waits for before being translated, which series memory it sees, and the export order. A volume without number or label sits outside that order: it learns from no earlier volume and teaches no later one.

Fictional example

Give LN 14+ to the side story read after volume 14, DX1 to a bonus book read once the main run is over, and leave a fictional art book unnumbered so it does not affect the reading order.
