Characters and identities

Keep every alias and relationship attached to the right character.

Steps

  1. Open the Characters tab. The graph shows identities and grouped links: a solid line is human-validated, a dotted one comes from the analysis or a suggestion. Use “Search for a character or alias” to find someone.
  2. Select a character to see its aliases, description and provenance. “View source passage” opens the passage behind a link.
  3. Under “Identities to match?”, “Confirm same person” merges a suggested pair. You can also use “Merge two identities” and pick the “Destination canonical profile”; the other names are kept as aliases.
  4. “Create a relationship” links a source and a target character with a type such as child of, teaches, student of or friend of; “Add and validate relationship” saves it. “Discard this link” removes a wrong one, which is no longer given to the model.

What to know

A similar name does not prove a shared identity: compare both sheets before merging. Past merges are listed in the “Merge history”. In a series, identities across volumes are handled in the series’ Identities tab with “Merge…” and “Split…”, and each of these decisions is recorded in the series log.

Fictional example

Merge “Captain Mara” into “Mara” only after checking that both names refer to the same fictional person; “Captain Mara” then stays as an alias.
